FAQs
In
the past 200 radio and TV interviews, these are the most frequently asked
questions about our work.
1.
What is so different about your teaching method?
Answer: Most new methods turn out to be fads. Our methods are drawn from
75 years of applied educational research including 2 of the largest and
longest lasting studies with hundreds of thousands of students over a
20-year period. These methods consistently achieved the best results,
but they are not often used in schools.
2.
Will your methods work with any child?
Answer: Yes. We have taught many normal garden-variety students as well
as those who are diagnosed with almost every disability imaginable. We
have consistently succeeded where others have not and we credit that success
to the methods we use, not to any special talent we have as teachers.
3.
If your methods are so successful why don't schools use them?
Answer: That is a complicated question. First, despite the research, schools
sometimes don't know about these programs. Secondly, teachers are almost
never given the training to use these programs in the classroom. Thirdly,
these programs require more skill and effort than many other programs.
Teachers get no additional rewards other than personal satisfaction for
such commitment even when they create successful students. They may even
arouse the anger and jealousy of their less dedicated peers. Finally,
these programs allow for everyone to be held accountable for their teaching
and many schools would perfer to avoid that degree of accountability.
4.
Why did you write the new reading series?
Answer: When we published our bestseller, Teach
Your Children Well, we did an extensive book-signing tour. Parents,
particularly homeschoolers, came to the book signings looking for materials
that would let them achieve the same kind of success in reading and math
that we were having. They asked for a reading program that was like a
recipe book so that they could teach their children to read in the same
way as they teach them to make cookies. We returned home and produced
what we believe is the perfect solution.
5.
Do parents need special training to use our books?
Answer: No. We wrote the books so that they can be used by any parent
who can read and who follows the instructions in the Instructor's Guide.
We are doing Workshops
to teach parents how to best use the books to get maximum results in the
fastest time.
6.
Can schools use our new series?
Answer: Yes, the reading programs can be used from kindergarten to eighth
grade in regular classrooms, in special education classrooms or in after-school
programs.
7.
Why are you so confident about these methods to teach reading and math?
Answer: During the last 25 years, I have started more than 20 learning
centres in Canada and the U.S. based on these methods. Each and every
centre has had continual success with literally thousands of children
and adult students who need help with reading, math, spelling and writing.
The reading series uses the same approach and will have the same results.
